What Is a Attunement - and Why It Is Not the Same as Healing

Most spiritual seekers in India today have heard of Reiki, of pranic healing, of crystal healing, of Lama Fera, of Karuna, of Veer attunement, of Kritya attunement, and a long list of related practices. They are often grouped together loosely as 'energy healing'. This is not technically accurate. Energy healing is the symptomatic application - using energy to address a specific issue. Attunement is a separate event entirely. It is the ceremonial transmission of a specific spiritual frequency from a qualified master to a student, which permanently alters the student's subtle channels.

Once you have received an attunement, you do not need to receive it again. It becomes part of your subtle body in the same way that a vaccine becomes part of your immune system. From that point onwards, the frequency is available to you on demand - you can run it through your hands to heal another person, or you can sit in meditation and have the frequency move through your own system, depending on the tradition.

There are many attunement lineages, and they differ in their flavour rather than their basic mechanism. Reiki, originating from the Japanese master Mikao Usui in the early twentieth century, transmits a gentle universal life-force frequency through specific symbols. Karuna Reiki is a later extension with more focused symbols for emotional and ancestral healing. Lama Fera is a Tibetan lineage said to be older. Kundalini Reiki, Vedic Pranic Healing, and the various indigenous Indian attunements such as Veer, Kritya, Kankal Bhairav, and Aghor Laxmi are rooted in specific deities and tantric lineages rather than in a generic 'universal' source.

What does an attunement ceremony look like? The student sits in front of the master in a clean, ritually prepared space. The master invokes the relevant deity or master lineage, draws specific symbols in the air or on the student's crown, palms, and other chakras, and chants the relevant mantras. The ceremony takes anywhere from twenty minutes to several hours depending on the lineage. At the end, the student is usually asked to remain in silence for some hours and to refrain from certain foods and activities for a few days while the attunement integrates.

Almost everyone who receives an attunement notices something immediately - a warmth in the palms, a tingling at the crown, an unusual depth in the next night's sleep, a vivid dream. Over the following weeks, the more lasting effects emerge: the inner sense of being held, the ability to feel another person's subtle field, the reduction in low-grade anxiety.

How is this different from healing? Healing is what the attunement enables you to do. Once attuned, you can place your hands on yourself or on another person and the frequency flows through. The healing is the application; the attunement is the installation. Some healing modalities (massage, breathwork, some forms of pranic healing) do not require an attunement - anyone can learn them. But the deeper transmission-based modalities do.

Who should consider an attunement? Anyone working as a counsellor, therapist, doctor, nurse, teacher, or caregiver who finds that the work drains them. Anyone with chronic low-grade fatigue not explained by medicine. Anyone with persistent patterns inherited from family - recurring relationship cycles, recurring financial cycles, recurring health cycles - that talk therapy has not been able to shift. Anyone on a serious spiritual path who feels they have hit a plateau.

How do you choose a lineage? This is where chart-based advice helps. If your chart has a strong Jupiter and Moon, Reiki and Karuna Reiki are excellent first attunements. If your chart has a strong Mars and Saturn, a Veer or Kankal Bhairav attunement is more appropriate - these are warrior-energy attunements that match a warrior chart. If your chart shows strong Venus or Lakshmi placements, an Aghor Laxmi attunement is often life-changing.

How do you choose a master? Look for an unbroken lineage. Ask the master who attuned them, and who attuned that person, and so on. A master who cannot trace their lineage clearly is a red flag. Look for someone who lives modestly, charges proportionate fees, and does not promise miracles. The best attunement masters teach you the practice and then send you home - they do not try to keep you dependent.

When is the best time to receive an attunement? Purnima (full moon) days are classical. The channel between guru and student is naturally widest during the full moon. Maha Shivaratri is the strongest single night of the year for any Shaiva attunement (Veer, Kritya, Bhairav). Mondays are good for Chandra-Reiki and other lunar attunements. Saturdays are good for Aghor and Kankal Bhairav, which work with Saturn's energy.

After the attunement: practise daily, even ten minutes. The frequency strengthens with use, like a muscle. Most lineages have a 21-day or 40-day integration practice; honour it. Maintain a clean diet during the integration period (vegetarian, no alcohol). Keep your first practice subject simple - your own body, then a family member. Healing strangers comes later, once the channel is stable.
