Rahu and Ketu: The Karmic Axis of Your Chart

Of all the grahas in the Vedic system, Rahu and Ketu are the strangest. They have no physical body - no rock, no fire, no light of their own. They are mathematical points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun across the sky. When the Moon, the Sun, and one of these nodes line up, you get an eclipse. That is how powerful these two invisible points are - they can swallow the visible Sun for a few minutes.

Rahu also rules everything foreign, unfamiliar, taboo, technological, and futuristic. People with strong Rahu placements are often drawn to foreign lands, foreign languages, foreign spouses, foreign foods, the internet, cryptocurrency, anything novel. Rahu rules ambition in its raw, unrefined form - and also addiction, illusion, and obsession. He gives sudden gains and sudden losses with equal speed.

Ketu rules everything renunciate, mystical, ancestral, and dissolving. People with strong Ketu placements are often natural mystics, psychics, or healers - they retain abilities from past lives that other people have to learn from scratch. Ketu also rules headless action, sudden departures, and the kind of detachment that can become cold if not balanced.

The Dasha periods of Rahu and Ketu are the longest and the most karmically dense periods of any life. Rahu Mahadasha lasts 18 years. Ketu Mahadasha lasts 7 years. Together, when they fall in sequence, they account for 25 years of the standard 120-year Vimshottari lifespan. Remedies for an afflicted Rahu include: chanting the Rahu Beej mantra Om Bhram Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah 108 times daily; donating black or smoke-grey clothing, black sesame, mustard oil, and lead items; feeding street dogs (Rahu's vahana is the serpent, but dogs are considered Rahu's beneficiaries); avoiding alcohol and intoxicants which Rahu amplifies; and wearing a Hessonite gemstone only after a chart consultation, never casually.

Remedies for an afflicted Ketu include: meditation and silence as daily practice; Ganesha worship (Ganesha is the deity of Ketu); donating blankets, woollen clothing, and food to elderly people, especially those without family; reciting the Ketu Beej mantra Om Sram Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah 108 times daily; and visiting ancestral temples or performing Pitr Tarpan on Amavasya, since Ketu carries strong ancestral karmas.

A specific Rahu-Ketu remedy worth noting: many traditional astrologers recommend a Sarpa Dosha Puja or a Kalsarpa Dosha Puja at temples like Trimbakeshwar (Maharashtra), Kalahasti (Andhra Pradesh), or Mannarsala (Kerala) for charts with severe nodal afflictions. The ritual takes one full day and is considered to settle accumulated nodal karma in a way that daily mantra alone cannot.
