Mantras for Each Day of the Week: A Daily Sadhana Calendar

Every day of the week is ruled by one of the seven visible grahas. The Vedic tradition built an entire calendar around this - fasting days, mantra days, temple days, and even the days when certain transactions should and should not happen. If you adopt only one practice from this article, let it be this: chant the mantra of the day on the day. The amplification is real and the practice takes only twenty minutes.
Monday - ruled by Chandra (the Moon). The deity of the day is Shiva, in whose matted hair the Moon resides. The mantras: Om Som Somaya Namah (the Chandra Beej mantra) for emotional stability and a strong Moon. Om Namah Shivaya (the Panchakshara) for general Shiva worship. The Mahamrityunjaya for healing.
Method on Monday: bathe before sunrise. Wear white or off-white. Offer a few drops of milk and water at a Shivalinga, or to a Shiva image if no temple is accessible. Chant 108 times. Many traditional families keep a partial fast on Mondays - no salt after sunset - for sixteen consecutive Mondays as a Sankalpa for a specific Shiva-related blessing.
Tuesday - ruled by Mangal (Mars). The deity is Hanuman, who absorbs Mars' fiery energy. The mantras: Om Hanumate Namah and the full Hanuman Chalisa. Also Om Angarakaya Namah for the Mars Beej. For Mars-related debts and disputes, the Bajrang Baan is recommended.
Method on Tuesday: visit a Hanuman temple if possible. Wear red. Offer red flowers, sindoor, jaggery, and red sweets. The Hanuman Chalisa read on a Tuesday morning, even once, addresses an extraordinary range of issues - debts, enemies, accidents, fear, lack of confidence.
Wednesday - ruled by Budh (Mercury). The deity is Vishnu. The mantras: Om Bum Budhaya Namah (the Budh Beej) and the Vishnu Sahasranama. Reading even a few hundred names of Vishnu on a Wednesday morning steadies Mercury - which means it steadies your speech, your decisions, and your business affairs.
Method on Wednesday: wear green. Donate to children or to causes related to education. Avoid harsh speech - Mercury is hypersensitive to the words you put into the world on his day.
Thursday - ruled by Guru (Jupiter). The deity is Brihaspati or Vishnu. The mantras: Om Gram Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah (the Jupiter Beej) and the Brihaspati Stotra. Reading a chapter of the Bhagavad Gita on Thursday is also classically prescribed.
Method on Thursday: wear yellow. Offer yellow flowers, chana dal, and turmeric to Vishnu or to your guru. Thursday is the best day to begin learning anything new, to consult an astrologer, to perform a Namakaran for a newborn, and (for unmarried women) to begin the Pukhraj wearing ritual.
Friday - ruled by Shukra (Venus). The deity is Lakshmi. The mantras: the Sri Suktam (16 verses, takes about 20 minutes) and the Lakshmi Beej mantra: Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namah. Both are prescribed for prosperity, household harmony, and the well-being of the women of the family.
Method on Friday: wear white or pink. Offer fresh white flowers and a little ghee diya at a Lakshmi altar. Avoid lending money on a Friday - classical texts say it weakens Venus in your chart.
Saturday - ruled by Shani (Saturn). The deity is Shani himself, but the practical worship is to Hanuman, the only deity Saturn cannot harm. The mantras: Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah (the Shani Beej), the Dasharatha Shani Stotra, the Shani Chalisa, and again the Hanuman Chalisa.
Method on Saturday: wear black or dark blue. Light a mustard oil lamp under a peepal tree at sunset if possible. Donate black sesame, mustard oil, black blanket, iron, or food to a labourer. Saturn especially honours service to the elderly, the poor, and the disabled - any of these acts on a Saturday softens his transit.
Sunday - ruled by Surya (the Sun). The deity is Surya Narayana. The mantras: the Aditya Hridayam (a powerful 31-verse hymn taught by the sage Agastya to Lord Rama before the battle with Ravana) and the Surya Ashtakam. Also Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah, the Surya Beej.
Method on Sunday: face the rising sun. Offer water (arghya) with a copper vessel, ideally before 8 AM. Wear orange or saffron. Avoid eating salt before sunset if you can manage a partial fast - many traditional families do this for eleven consecutive Sundays as a Sankalpa for Sun-related issues (career, leadership, father's health).
If you adopt the full weekly cycle, you are doing something the tradition takes very seriously - you are personally honouring all seven grahas every week. Over a few months, you will notice that the planets in your chart that were silent or hostile begin to soften. Mantras are slow medicine. They work.
